Misconduct Claims | Internal Investigations | Civil, Criminal & Administrative Defense

Massachusetts police officers face a level of legal scrutiny that is unlike most professions. Actions taken in the line of duty—often in rapidly evolving and high-pressure situations—can later become the subject of internal investigations, civil lawsuits, or even criminal charges. Allegations may arise from members of the public, internal affairs divisions, department leadership, or state and federal agencies.

These matters carry serious consequences. An investigation or complaint can put your career, reputation, financial security, and freedom at risk.

At Reardon Joyce & Akerson, we provide experienced, strategic legal defense for police officers and other law enforcement personnel across Massachusetts. Our attorneys understand the realities of law enforcement and the legal standards governing officer conduct. We are committed to protecting your rights and guiding you through every stage of the process with clarity and confidence.

Legal Protection Through the Fraternal Order of Police Legal Defense Plan

Reardon Joyce & Akerson is proud to participate in the FOP’s Legal Defense Plan—one of the most comprehensive legal protection programs available to law enforcement officers nationwide.

Every year, officers face increasing legal exposure both on and off duty. From use-of-force claims to false or exaggerated accusations, a single allegation can quickly escalate into a career-defining legal battle. The Legal Defense Plan is designed to provide protection when it matters most.

What “The Legal Defense Plan” Covers

The FOP’s Legal Defense Plan provides coverage for a full range of duty-related legal matters, including:

  • Administrative Defense – Representation in internal affairs investigations, disciplinary proceedings, and off-duty incidents impacting employment
  • Civil Defense – Protection against lawsuits arising from actions taken within the scope of official duties
  • Criminal Defense – Legal representation for investigations or charges connected to on-duty conduct

A key benefit of the plan is that legal fees are fully covered when you work with a participating attorney, removing the financial burden that often prevents officers from securing experienced legal counsel early in a case.

Backed by the National Fraternal Order of Police, the plan reflects a clear mission: to provide trusted legal defense for active and retired law enforcement officers and ensure their rights are protected.

As participating counsel, Reardon Joyce & Akerson delivers that protection at the local level—providing Massachusetts officers with responsive, knowledgeable, and experienced representation when it is needed most.
